Horizon Japan International School welcomes applications of students from all socio-economic, ethnic, religious, linguistic and national or international backgrounds who seek a challenging academic program and active participation in an inclusive, diverse and multicultural community.
The HJIS Online Application Form with all of the required documents needs to be completed within a month of the submission of the initial registration. Students are accepted on a space-available basis throughout the current school year, as we have a rolling admissions policy. Applications will not be reviewed until all the supporting documents are received by the admissions office.
Our admissions process is designed to help families understand HJIS, prepare the required documents, and move clearly through inquiry, application, assessment, and enrollment.

1. How can I apply to an international school in Yokohama?
The admissions process begins with an inquiry through our online admissions system. Families are encouraged to learn more about HJIS, review the entry requirements, explore our programs, and schedule a visit or virtual tour before submitting a full application.
After the application and required documents are submitted, the Admissions team reviews the file. Depending on the student’s age, grade level, language background, previous school experience, and learning needs, the next step may include an assessment, student interview, and/or parent meeting.
Once the review process is complete, families will be notified of the admissions decision. Applications are reviewed only after all required supporting documents have been received.
2. What curriculum does HJIS teach?
Horizon Japan International School is an IB Continuum World School, offering an international education from Preschool through Grade 12.
Students learn through the International Baccalaureate framework, including the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme. Our curriculum is inquiry-based, internationally minded, and designed to develop academic knowledge together with communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, service, and intercultural understanding.
As a school community, HJIS aims to nurture responsible lifelong learners who are prepared to participate thoughtfully in a changing world.
3. Where is HJIS located, and what kind of school community will my child join?
HJIS is located in Yokohama, Kanagawa, within the greater Tokyo metropolitan area. Our campus is accessible for families living in Yokohama, Tokyo, and other areas of Kanagawa, with nearby access from Yokohama Station, Kanagawa Station, and Shin-Takashima Station.
HJIS is a diverse international school community with students from Preschool to Grade 12 and 37+ different nationalities represented across the school. This multicultural environment is an important part of the HJIS experience, helping students learn with and from others while developing international-mindedness, respect, understanding, and a strong sense of community.
4. Does HJIS provide school buses, lunch, uniforms, and after-school programs?
Yes. HJIS offers several services and programs to support family life and the student experience.
The school provides bus service on selected routes, optional school lunch through Cezars Kitchen, a school uniform system, daycare service for eligible younger students, and after-school programs across a range of interests. These may include sports, arts, technology, academic enrichment, and cultural activities.

5. Does HJIS accept applications throughout the year?
Yes. HJIS has a rolling admissions policy, which means families may apply throughout the school year.
Students are accepted on a space-available basis, depending on grade-level capacity, eligibility, and the school’s ability to meet the student’s needs.
8. Where can I find tuition and fee information?
Tuition and fee information is available on the Tuition and Fees page. Families can review application fees, registration fees, tuition, building fund, maintenance fees, and other school-related costs.
Families whose school fees are supported by an employer may also wish to learn more about the Corporate Contribution Program, which is a corporate scholarship arrangement for eligible participating companies.
6. What language is used for teaching at HJIS?
English is the primary language of instruction at Horizon Japan International School (HJIS). Students develop strong English communication skills within a diverse and international environment.
Japanese is supported across all grade levels, with instruction tailored to each student’s ability. In secondary school, students also have the opportunity to study Spanish as part of the curriculum.
7. Does HJIS offer support for students new to English?
Students who are developing their English are supported through structured programmes at Horizon Japan International School (HJIS) in Yokohama. This includes English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, helping students build confidence and access the curriculum effectively.
In addition, HJIS provides broader learning support tailored to individual needs.
10. Does HJIS provide visa support?
Upon enrollment at HJIS, students must either be Japanese permanent residents or hold an appropriate valid visa, such as a dependent visa or student visa.
HJIS does not issue student visas or provide visa sponsorship. Families relocating to Japan should confirm visa requirements independently and make sure the appropriate visa status is arranged before enrollment.
