TEDxYouth@HJIS 2025: Empowering Ideas, Elevating Voices

At Horizon Japan International School in Yokohama, we believe that students don’t have to wait until adulthood to make a difference. They already have powerful ideas — and we’re giving them a stage to share them.

We’re proud to announce that TEDxYouth@HJIS will return in 2025 for its third official edition, offering our Grade 6–12 students the opportunity to step into the spotlight and speak to a global audience from right here in Kanagawa.

“Speak your truth, even if your voice shakes.”

This month, our Grade 10 students stood tall, presenting their MYP Personal Projects, the culmination of months of research, reflection, and risk-taking. From global issues to deeply personal themes, their work revealed not just knowledge, but purpose.

Meanwhile, students in Grades 6–12 began preparing for TEDxYouth@HJIS 2025, a stage where ideas are not just shared, but shaped into movements.

Some will speak. Others will volunteer. All will grow.

Because here at Horizon, we believe that when young people speak, the world should listen.

What is TEDxYouth@HJIS?

TEDxYouth@HJIS is an independently organized event licensed by TED and hosted on our Horizon campus. It’s part of the global TEDx initiative, which brings together communities to celebrate “ideas worth spreading.”

Our student speakers will take the stage to present original talks on a wide range of topics — from technology, innovation, and education to culture, identity, and social justice. Each talk is crafted over months of mentorship, feedback, and practice, allowing every student to grow as a thinker, communicator, and leader.

Theme: Coming Soon

The 2025 event theme will be announced later this spring — but students are already preparing. Past years have explored topics such as Redefining Success and Perspectives That Matter, prompting powerful reflections on how young people see the world and their place within it.

No matter the theme, what makes TEDxYouth@HJIS unique is that it’s completely student-powered — from the speeches to the stage management, marketing, tech, and design. It’s a space where student voice drives everything.

Why These Events Matter

At Horizon Japan International School, we are committed to nurturing well-rounded, internationally minded learners. Events like World Read Aloud Day, TEDxYouth@HJIS, and multicultural celebrations enrich our curriculum and align with our belief that education should prepare students to lead with empathy, creativity, and global awareness.

Whether they are writing a speech, presenting a project, or celebrating new year traditions, Horizon students are actively building the knowledge, confidence, and cultural fluency they will carry for life.

How to Get Involved

  • Students in Grades 6–12 can apply to speak or join the event team (design, tech, logistics). Information is shared in homerooms and through club advisors.

  • Parents and community members are encouraged to attend the event and support the students.

  • The full event will also be recorded and uploaded to the official TEDx YouTube channel following the presentation.

More details, including the official event datetheme, and speaker lineup, will be shared.
