Early Learning Centre

The Early Learning Centre (ELC) is for children of ages two and a half through five. We recognize that all children can reach their fullest potential with effective and appropriate educational guidance. A child’s early life experience has complex and long-lasting effects; we make every effort to provide our children with a safe, happy and secure learning environment.

Principles

  • Each child is unique
We believe each child brings qualities from birth that can all be directed in a positive and acceptable direction. Our commitment focuses around development, inclusion, safety and well-being.
  • Positive relationships
Children learn to be strong and independent in positive relationships with people. Our commitment focuses on respect, supporting learning and cooperation with parents.
  • Supportive environment
Environment plays a significant role in supporting and extending a child’s development and learning. Our commitment is focused around observation, assessment and planning; individual support; the learning environment; and in the wider context – transitions, continuity, and multi-agency working.
  • Enhanced learning and development
We are aware that children have their own strategies and learning pace, and that all areas of learning and development are equally important and connected to each other.

Curriculum Framework

Image result for ib logoThe Primary Years Programme supports our aims to develop the child as a whole. The programme is child centred and integrated programming evolves naturally. Play features strongly in the programme. Children learn naturally through guided play so that they can explore, ask questions, invent, construct and solve problems. The learning experiences provided are designed to promote the use of language, early concepts of numbers, and fine and gross motor skills. The programme provides opportunities and time for the child to explore in a guided play environment with a variety of experiences, materials and equipment to choose from. These activities enhance the children’s love of learning and stimulate their natural curiosity and desire to explore. The children are taught by experienced teachers and are supported by teacher assistants who have a sound knowledge of early childhood development. The programme and delivery are flexible and undergo an ongoing assessment to meet the needs of the children.

After School Programmes (ASP)

HJIS provides many after-school programmes for the students. The objective of the ASPs is to give students aged 3 and up the opportunity to do activities that cannot be done in their regular classes. These extracurricular activities, guided by members of our faculty or the larger community, give the students a chance to relax and socialize with others.
We are currently running 27 ASPs each week. Any nominal additional cost is to cover materials used for an ASP related activity. Some examples of past and current ASPs are:

  • Dance
  • Yoga
  • Cooking
  • Origami
  • Karaoke
  • Basketball
  • Fun Maths
  • Gym Games
