Application Process

All prospective students must complete an application form and go through a level assessment and an individual interview in order to be considered. Students may apply within one year of the proposed starting date with the exception of PreSchool and PreKinder Students. Below is a description of the steps in the application process to assist you in completing the application process in a timely manner.

1. Review the Admission Policy

Before applying to Horizon Japan International School, please take a moment to review our Admissions Policy and Procedures. If you have questions regarding the admissions process, please do not hesitate to contact our office at or +81(0)45-584-1945. We strongly suggest prospective families visit our campus, view the facilities, meet our staff and see our school in action. The Admissions Team will meet with parents and answer questions at the end of the tour.

2. Submit the Application Form

All applicants must complete the online application form. Upon receiving the completed application form and documents, our admissions committee will review the application in accordance with our admissions criteria.

A copy of the following documents should be attached to the application forms when submitting;

  • Official copies of academic records from each school previously attended over the past two years, translated into English. The translation needs to be notarized or signed by the translator.
    • Grade 1 students must provide Kindergarten reports (or the equivalent).
    • Pre-School & Kindergarten students are not required to submit reports, but progress reports or teacher’s recommendation letter from the child’s previous schools are beneficial.
  • A student portfolio with photocopied examples of the most recent class work is recommended.
  • Proof of payment of the application fee of 20,000 JPY

  • A photocopy of the student’s passport or birth certificate for verification of birth date

  • Photo of the student

  • Photos of the guardian(s)

  • A guarantee letter from your company if it is paying the school fees and tuition

  • Recommendation Letter

    • For K-Grade 1, teacher’s recommendation letters from previous schools are beneficial.

    • For Grades 2-12, teacher’s recommendation letter must be submitted, in a sealed envelope, or by email directly from the previous school,  at/before the family interview.

3. Interview and Assessment

All families submitting an application for HJIS will be invited for a family interview once the initial process is completed. Meetings will be made up of two distinct parts and involve both the parents and children. Families will be notified of assessment dates. Placement assessments help us determine the grade placement and whether any special support services are needed for the child.

4. Admission Decision

After the school meeting, the school will review the application in full. The Admissions team will contact all families within two to four weeks of the interview to clarify the status of the application. If an offer is made, an acceptance letter will be emailed to you. Families need to inform the admission office within ten days to confirm their intention to enroll.
