Preschool 5
- Language Arts
The goal for five-year-olds is to give them a solid base upon which future language learning can be built. We follow the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) frameworks, which utilize both phonics and sight words. By also incorporating a variety of other materials, our overall program provides interesting and meaningful activities that engage and encourage all students in the four language areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Much of the language learning will be through guided play. This helps develop conversational skills through a medium children enjoy and understand, whilst encouraging social skills development through taking turns, asking and sharing.
- Mathematics
The mathematics program utilizes a variety of materials. Most of our math concepts are learned through hands-on activities. Some of the topics we address are rote counting, counting objects, recognition of numbers, simple addition and subtraction, patterns, graphing and measurement. Children will develop observational and problem solving skills through guided play. Our aim is to provide the students with a strong mathematics base for their elementary school program.
- Music
In the music program, students are introduced to musical concepts that they will develop throughout elementary school. Singing and movement activities emphasize musical ideas such as rhythm, pitch, melody, and harmony. Students learn very basic musical notation and express themselves using simple instruments and the keyboard.
- Physical Education
In Physical Education (PE), we focus on the development of large motor skills and the idea of physical activity for enjoyment and health. During each class period, we include both stretching and loco motor activities (running, hopping, jumping, etc.). In addition, students learn a variety of games that help build coordination, balance, turn-taking and self-confidence.
- Art
Art is a time for strengthening a student's fine motor skills as well as discovering a few simple principles of art. The children are encouraged to experiment, explore, shape, and invent things. Many of the art activities overlap with our reading and math programs.
- Computer
In our computer program, the primary focus is on computer exploration. This includes such things as using a mouse, playing educational games and exposure to keyboard.
